Siding in Somerville, MA

A siding project our team completed in Somerville, MA - February 2022. A before-and-after set shows a weathered three-decker stripped of failing clapboards, then rebuilt in medium blue wood clapboard siding with white trim, new stairs and restored bay windows.

These frames document the three-decker in its original state, before any new material went on. The front gable carries scrolled brackets under the rake, a pink-and-green painted cornice, a two-story bay at the left and a bracketed door hood at the right, all over clapboards weathered down to bare wood. The side wall is worse: paint has failed in long horizontal streaks, boards are cupped and split, and a rear projection is already stripped and papered in housewrap. Twin brick chimneys and a flat white roof edge cap the building above the street wires.

The photos capture the pre-work condition and the start of tear-off, with clapboards pulled from the rear projection and housewrap stapled over the exposed sheathing. Failing boards run the full height of both visible elevations, and the bay, door hood, brackets and cornice all remain in place to be worked around rather than removed.
